"Haru's best friend. She has a bright personality and owns two puppies. The girls were separated on the way home from the fireworks show, and she now wanders the town at night."

Yui is one of the protagonists in Yomawari: Midnight Shadows. She looks for her friend Haru when the former went missing upon being separated from the latter.

Appearance[]

She and Haru look similar to the Protagonist from Yomawari: Night Alone. Her long light brown hair is worn up in a ponytail, and like the Protagonist, she wears a red bow. She has bandages around her face.

Also like the Protagonist, she wears a school uniform. It consists of a brown sailor top with a white undershirt that has longer sleeves, and a matching white skirt. She wears brown shoes with white socks. In addition, she is carrying a pink rabbit-head pochette on a green strap.

When she takes the appearance of a corrupted and mind-controlled Spirit, she appears as a black silhouette with two eyes. The silhouette appears as an entity with only two feet and a head with waving hair all around it, which are both connected together by a body of a human (consisting of the legs, arms, and torso). When the Spirit expresses rage or attacks at close range, her head splits into two. The two head opens a mouth that stretches from one head to the other, with both the teeth and the tongue sticking out. The two heads also separate the two eyes, one for each head.

Plot[]

Before the events of "Midnight Shadows"[]

Yui lived with a dysfunctional family that remained unpleasant for her life, the only source of happiness of her life is her two dogs, Kuro and Chaco, including Haru. Her father was revealed to be a gambling addict, and her mother was mentally unstable and abusive, thus indicating the bandages in her face. Before the main story took place, her father suddenly dies, then her mother was no longer paying attention to her, committing neglect. It is unknown or never revealed throughout the entire story how her father died, and how she lived under the care of her other relatives despite the lack of information of how she lives before the main events took place. On the week before the end of summer, she also receives the news from Haru that she was moving to the city, which was a devastating to her. Before the festival day began, one of her dogs died, leading to her to be heartbroken.

Prologue: "The Tragedy"[]

On the day of the summer festival with her plans to meet Haru for the last time, Yui buried Kuro in the mountains, then later removed the dog leash from Chaco, despite not wanting to lose one more dog, he continues to follow her, until they reach a wooden plank used as a makeshift bridge, revealing to be influenced by a mysterious voice. Yui throws a pebble, distracting him, and causing the bridge to collapse, leaving her last dog unable to reach her. Despite Chaco continued calling out to her, she went on her own way up to the mountains. In there, and on top of a box, she used her own dog's leash as a noose, thus hanging herself to death.

During the night before the fireworks show of the festival, Haru visits her home and Yui apologizes for being late. They went on their way back to the mountains for the show. The two enjoy it and cherish it together since this is their last time meeting each other, unaware that she is actually dead and can still manifest normally as if she was still alive. On their way back home, using a flashlight along the way, she tells Haru to hide in the bushes. She comes across a dog leash, not knowing it was a trap set by Malice, gets caught by one of the minions.

Chapter 1: "Fireworks Day"[]

After getting caught by one of the minions, Yui wakes up in the small construction site, barely remembering getting chased by a spirit. Going back to the main street, she reads a torn magazine about an encounter with a familiar spirit that has to be offered with hands, neck, feet. On the way back home, she encounters a human hand on the ground before getting attacked by Mr. Kotowari, as the scene cuts to black.

Chapter 2[]

Waking up in the library, Yui finds a working flashlight on the floor and tries to find the exit, before hearing unknown footsteps behind her (possibly a Mirror Spirit eventually copying her), eventually encountering a big mirror after turning on the lights in the area. She stands back suddenly, feeling an ominous presence beside her.

Chapter 4[]

Yui wakes up in a storage room from an empty building, which seems to be an abandoned mansion. She wakes up from a bark from Chaco, but he is not there. Just as things begin to become strange yet unsettling and the clock begins to chime, Yui hides inside an empty wardrobe before switching the perspective back to Haru.

She wakes up once again, in a junkyard at the woods. Trying to find a way out to get back home again to avoid making her mother worry about her, she eventually encounters Chaco, who was looking for her. Just as before the perspective switches back, Chaco suddenly runs away as if seeming to bring someone over.

Haru comes in after Chaco brought her over and the two are together at last seemingly. Haru realizes that she is not here, despite Yui can see her normally but Haru cannot see nor hear her. Yui tells her that she is right here, quickly realizing that she is now dead and have become a spirit.

Chapter 5[]

Yui decides to go back to the Mountains after leaving a letter for Haru and tells her last pet dog to take care of Haru in her place, that she will remember something related to her death once she gets there. Eventually reaching her house, she reads the letter that Haru was looking for her and continues on her way. Reaching the large wooden bridge, she tries to remember that she and Chaco walked along the path, but instead went towards the mountains. Not being able what she had done, she is aware that she tried to rescue Haru, not even wanting to leave her.

Chapter 8[]

Yui, finally learning the truth about her death, with Haru arriving. This time, she can now see and hear Yui. She replies to their promise that they will be together forever, before transforming into a demon spirit controlled by Malice and attacking her.

She bids Haru to take care of her last living pet dog, before bidding farewell as her spirit disappears.

Chapter 10 (The Final Chapter of "Midnight Shadows" - Sunrise)[]

In the Malice cave, Haru meets the spirit of Yui again before being interrupted by Malice. As the last struggle ensues, Haru cuts all of the red strings and attempts to run away from the Malice-possessed Yui, in a final desperate effort to kill Haru, before calling out to Mr. Kotowari that she cannot stand Yui becoming a corrupted spirit. Mr. Kotowari cuts Haru's left arm, and finally defeats Malice, succeeding in saving the spirit of Yui.

Haru, wounded from the ordeal, apologizes to Yui that she was not able to say goodbye and finally bid farewell. The spirit of Yui brings Haru back to the real world with Chaco, letting go of her.

Epilogue (Post-Main Story of "Midnight Shadows")[]

In the last days of summer, Haru, along with Chaco, is seen giving a red flower to Yui's grave in the mountains, as a sign of "thank you". With Chaco becoming Haru's new friend and owner, she wonders what the future will look like since life can be scary. It is unknown what happened to Yui's mother, but safe to assume that she is arrested for neglecting and abusing her own child and is sentenced to be rehabilitated with her parenting rights removed. The corpse of Yui was never mentioned at the epilogue, it is either found by the police to be given proper burial or was never found at all (since all of posters containing her identity picture were all torn off).

Trivia[]

  • One of Yui's attacks (which she uses before temporarily having a 'human' appearance) has a pattern that resembles the pattern of common fireworks when they explode in the air. The attack's pattern may be a reference to when Yui and Haru were watching fireworks before the former was supposed to move away.
