Chaco is one of Yui's two pet dogs who appears in Yomawari: Midnight Shadows. He gets released by Yui at the start of the story, and begins a search to look for his owner after they are separated. Over the course of the search, he helps Haru look for Yui and helps her out of tough situations.

Appearance[]

Chaco is a Pomeranian breed of dog. His appearance consists of mostly light brown, orange-ish fur. He also has some white fur on his tail, ears, feet, underbelly, beard, mouth, nose, and around the eyes. He is quite small, appearing to be smaller than Poro, and seem to be roughly the same size as Yui's other dog, Kuro.

Personality[]

Chaco is an extremely intelligent and loyal dog. When he and Yui first get separated from each other, he continued to try to call out to her. When she disappeared and didn't return, he also helped Yui's friend, Haru, in her attempts to find her, and accompanied her in her various searches around town. He also displayed a great deal of courage when he intimidated or outright scared off various dangers that Haru faced.

Plot[]

Chaco first appears in the Prologue, accompanying Yui as she buries her other dog, Kuro, in the mountains. Shortly after, she takes Chaco off his leash, and he runs off (later revealed to be following the voice of Malice), and Yui follows him. However, they eventually become separated, and Chaco eventually returns to the town after his owner does not return.

Chaco later runs into Haru, who is looking for Yui after she never returned from the fireworks display the two attended, and joins her in her search. He helps guide her around the town, and together they check the various places that they think Yui could be at. He also helps save her from some difficult situations, such as showing her an safe escape route from the collapsing Haunted House when one of their search attempts goes awry.

After the fateful confrontation with Malice, Haru's final acceptance of Yui's death, and the latter's passing, Chaco resides with Haru. He accompanied her when they visited Yui's grave, and continued to stay with her as she left her house at night to explore both her own and the neighboring towns.

Trivia[]

  • Chaco's name may have come from the phrase "Chairo no Koinu" (茶色の子犬), which means "Brown-Colored Puppy" in Japanese. This may refer to the dog's light brown fur.
  • Chaco is one of the charms that Haru can choose to "equip" at her house, and is made available after the conclusion of the story.
    • Equipping him will allow him to follow Haru around when she is outdoors, and prevents Mr. Yomawari from kidnapping her and sending her to the Factory in the Protagonist's hometown.
